Mons. László Bíró, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese Kalocsa-Kecskemét (Hungary) was on the Youth Festival in August 2007. With his first coming to Medjugorje, he responded to the invitation of a group of about 1000 young pilgrims from Hungary. Many of them had been converted in Medjugorje, and they wanted their bishop to feel the spiritual power of this place. He climbed the Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain. He experienced that, while climbing the Cross Mountain, one is not only elevating himself physically, but is also spiritually elevated by God.
“Medjugorje is one of the instruments in God’s hands, with which God is showing how ardently He loves men”, he said for Radio Mir Medjugorje. He added that Taize and Medjugorje were two major meeting points for youth in Europe. “In Taize, young people learn how to pray, and Medjugorje is inviting to conversion, penance and adoration of God. Here, through faith, young people fall in love with inner freedom. I think that there is no other place where we can see this many joyful, happy people. Every place of Marian pilgrimage is a place of witnessing Christ and faith.”
As he was asked about what he is going to say about Medjugorje in Hungary, he replied: “I bought one hundred Our Lady’s images where it is written: ‘If you knew how much I love you, you would cry for joy’. I will tell this sentence to one hundred people when I come back home.”
Holy Father Benedict XVI. once quoted Mahatma Gandhi who said, that fish in the ocean live in silence, animals on earth are loud, and birds in the sky sing. He added that people today live in their dreams, and therefore do not hear the silence of the ocean and the singing in the sky. “I think that Medjugorje leads people to the silence of the ocean, and to sky where there is a song. Here, human being is elevated beyond the animal state. Here, we are led towards Truth. Those who come to Medjugorje with an open heart go home completely different. I wish there would be many more happy people as I can see here.”
